Does anyone know if there is a direct line from Rome to Nice? How long is the ride? How much are the tickets? is taking the ferry a good idea? or should we take the train?

I checked two ferry sources and did not find any reference to a ferry going from Rome to Nice. You might find one by googling "Mediterranean ferry maps"

I checked out http://www.ferryticket.gr/ and didn't see a ferry run to Nice from Rome either. You can fly a budget airline. Blu-Express has a flight from FCO to Nice. www.blu-express.com.
