Ferry from Portsmouth, England to Cherbourg, France

What is a good place to stay in Cherbourg? Where is the nearest car rental in Cherbourg. Where should I go for tours of the D-Day beaches. I also need a place to stay close to St.Mont Michele. Thank you

Most of the small-group (van) tours of the D-Day sites originate in Bayeux, which has other reasons to recommend it (historic center not obliterated during the war, good invasion museum, cathedral, Bayeux Tapestry). There are many posts on this forum about D-Day tours. I liked my Overlord Tour a lot. I do not think the do-it-yourself approach is very good for the typical tourist. Without a professional driver/guide, you will not move around efficiently, and one beach will look pretty much like any other.

Hi,

I can't recommend a place to stay in Cherbourg, haven't been there yet, and only know that it's the terminus for regional trains departing from Paris with stops in Bayeux and Rouen. You picked a good place to inquire D-Day related tours since Cherbourg was the strategic objective once US troops broke out of Utah and raced to seal off the Cotentin psninsula. See if a car rental is at the train station or adjacent to it. In Arras (Nord Pas-de-Caiais) the car rental is on the same block as the station's main exit.
