Ferry from Italy to Croatia?

We are excitedly planning our first trip to Italy/Croatia. We plan to begin in Italy, and were considering the option of taking a ferry from Abruzzo or Marche to Croatia, with the ultimate goal of ending up in the Kvarnar region. Any advice? Would taking a train from Venice to Istria be more practical?
