Ferry from Holland to northen England

I will be travelling in July from Holland to England. I am interested in any advice about travelling by ferry. While we will not have a car, we are interested in the overnight accommodations a ferry provides. Questions: 1) What type of transport to take from Hoorn to IJmuiden? I have not found a ferry port further north of IJmuiden... 2) the 2 arrival locations in England seem to be Kingston-Upon-Hull and Newcastle upon Tyne. Any advice on which arrival location would be best in which to rent a car? Also, any advice on which ferry company to use is much appreciated. Thanks.

www.seat61.com is loaded with information on the ferries to the UK from Holland. We took the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam in May of 2010, during the volcano problems, and the room, food, and pricing was very competitive. Also, the ferry service runs a bus from Centrall in AMS to the port in Rotterdam for around 10 Euros. This May we are taking the Dutch flyer to the UK and then on to London. Be sure to prepay for the meals as they are much more expensive once you are on the boat, and you can use the voucher at either the buffet or the restaurant.. Also, check out the "spirits store" if you are going to rent a car as the prices are VAT-Free once you are on the water.
Finally, I wouldn't be surprised if the help desk on the ferry can guide you to where to get a rental car, however, we used the ferry because of the convenience to rail on both ends.

According to the map at www.directferries.co.uk, it indeed looks like IJmuiden is the farthest north ferry port in the Netherlands. From there the ferry only goes to Newcastle. Here's a quote from the Amsterdam ferry port page on that site: "In co-operation with a local Coach firm, DFDS Seaways provides a connecting Coach service between the Felison Terminal in IJmuiden and the Central Railway Station in Amsterdam."
