Is it possible? I'm going to be on a Greek Island in the Northern Sporades and need to travel to Istanbul. Any Ideas? I'd rather take Ferries than train but any ideas are very helpful. THANKS!
There are no ferries to Istanbul from anywhere in Greece.
Olympic Air flies between Athens and Skiathos and it would be easy to fly Skiathos > Athens > Istanbul.
You can get to some of the port cities in Turkey by ferry from Greece, but there are none going directly to Istanbul.
However, if you really like the idea of traveling by ferry, you can always take the ferry to one of the ports in Turkey, then take a bus, train or plane to Istanbul. Here is a link with information on the ferries: http://www.turkeytravelplanner.com/trans/Ship/GreekIslandFerries.html
True, you can ferry to Turkey's Aegean coast from some Greek islands - notably Samos, Rhodes, and Kos - but not from the Northern Sporades.
Thanks Mardee and Tom! I'm either going to take a ferry from Skopelos to Thessoloniki or a ferry from Skopelos to Volos and a bus to Thessoloniki. Then we're taking the overnight "friendship" train from Thessoloniki to Istanbul. Thanks again for your postings. Your help was awesome! -Elizabeth
