Is it better to go from Portsmouth to Cherbourg or Dover to Calais if we want to tour the Normandy beaches? I know it is farther from Dover, but the prices of crossing from Portsmouth are steep. Also, in which town is it easier to rent a car and can we drive it to Paris?

It's definitely easier and quicker to go from Portsmouth but it's by no means too difficult to drive down from Calais.
You can rent a car at Calais docks, all the big rental companies have offices there.
I haven't done this route for many years but the last time I did it I drove out of Calais and took the E402 highway to Rouen. It's a toll road but it was worth it.
