favourite airlines

Any favourite airlines from the Baltimore area to London, and returning from Scotland or Amsterdam to Baltimore??
I am willing to pay a bit more for legroom - and decent service also is a plus. However cannot afford business class - anything in between??
is it cheaper to book directly from the airlines or does one have to go through one of the travel sites?
what sites are good?

You can book one way to London and then one way from Edinburgh or Amsterdam separately and still get a deal

Many of the US legacy carriers have some sort of upgraded Economy seat or fare. I’m most familiar with United Economy Plus. You buy a regular economy fare, then pay to upgrade to the economy plus seats, which give you several extra inches of legroom. If you are tall like me, those extra inches are very nice. My memory is that it usually costs somewhere between $100 and $150 to upgrade to Europe from Dulles, my home airport.

If you are flying out of BWI, then BA is probably your best bet as they fly non-stop to London.

British Airways is our favorite ( basically all we fly to Europe) but we use miles so I do not know how they compare in cost. They certainly will be more than WOW. They do have World Traveler Plus which should offer more legroom, as well as a better meal.

If you book with WOW, make sure you enter your middle name on the booking form. Some 11 passengers were denied boarding at Toronto last week because their boarding passes lacked the middle name. It has caused quite a stir.

We used to have a favorite of British Air and Lufthansa. But really think they are all about the same these days. We recent had excellent service on AirItalia to Rome from New York. A bit of a surprise since we thought we were flying with Delta (they codeshare). Of the US airlines, we prefer Delta.

If Virgin is an option, their Economy Plus is much better than Delta's old one-I think Delta may have a new one on some routes that's better than Delta's old one.

BA has a dedicated cabin for their version of Economy Plus which we found more comfortable than United, or American in same class. The seats remind us of the old Business Class seats.

Yes, on Delta's new A350s and that product is called Premium Select. It's still not on par with Premium Economy cabins found on international carriers like Virgin Atlantic but the reviewers rave that it is superior to Delta Comfort. Waiting for A350s between JFK and European cities.

vijay, look at BWI's website to see which international carriers connect BWI to your European city interests. Then go to review websites like seatguru.com to read reviews about the flights offered to and from BWI. Depending on where you live, you might have more options from IAD if it isn't too inconvenient for you.

Whoever keeps up the airport pages on Wikipedia actually does a good job of updating current and seasonal routes.

For direct options, both KLM and United fly a Washington Dulles-Amsterdam non-stop flight, and it might be worth land transport to there to cut out connections by air. (American also is listed as having a Philadelphia-Amsterdam non-stop) All of them are going to have an economy comfort/extra leg room option.

Do book direct with the airline. If you need to change a ticket before departure or have some sort of weather or mechanical delays, it typically makes it easier to get a solution directly with the airline employee for your problem.

Note that the BA of 2018 is not the same BA of 2014. They have new management in place and have gone fee happy for many things that used to be included in a standard ticket price. Right now, the worst of it is happening in their short haul operations where they have to compete with easy jet and Ryanair, but you never know when they'll try to start charging for long haul meals and drinks down to a glass of water.

I, too, fly solely BA. Their transatlantic flights have not changed their services that I've noticed during the ap. 15 years that I've used them (I don't drink on flights). I've heard so much about WOW lately, mainly on this site, that I priced a BA RT flight and a WOW flight, I think it was for late September. The WOW flight turned out to be much more expensive, several hundred dollars more...unless you want to pick no options, which isn't for me. I only did this once so it could have been a fluke...plus WOW is an overnight flight, which is not acceptable to me. So, the alleged discount carriers are not necessarily the way to go if you are willing to watch flight prices for a month or so. I fly economy, but lately use a strategy for getting a seat usually with no one next to me.

BA has reduced their meal service a bit lately, causing much outcry on Flyertalk.

You can read about the meals offered in each class and route here:

https://www.britishairways.com/en-us/information/food-and-drink

For short-haul ( within Europe) flights, the food in Economy is "buy on board." They offer an assortment of snacks from Marks and Spencer, all priced £5 or less. Beverages cost as well.

Business class travelers on short-haul flights still get a meal appropriate to the time of day.

For long-haul flights, Economy passengers can get a "standard" 4-course meal with beverages for free. If they would like something nicer, they can pay for a meal ordered in advance. The second meal is a light snack served before landing, rather than a real meal.

Economy Plus ( World Traveler Plus) passengers receive the same main meal as business class passengers, but apparently it is served differently.

Business class service on long-haul flights has not changed.
