Fastest/cheepest transportation from port Maseille to Vatican City

I'll travel to Europe for the 1st time in May. I want to travel from the Marseille's port to Vatican City, stay one night, sight see, then travel back to Marseille airport (MRS). Looking for the easiest. most cost effective process. Hotel recommendations appreciated. Not looking for a high-end 5 star hotel, I won't spend much time there, however I don't want to be in a roach motel.

There are nonstop flights between Marseille and Rome, but they're not necessarily timed well to give you even a full day at the destination. Try www.skyscanner.com for your actual travel dates.

Alitalia, Ryanair and Vuelling fly from Marseille to Rome–Fiumicino.
Travelling from Marseille port to Rome city centre (or back again) will consume most of a day. What time do you arrive and disembark at Marseille? A number of hours may already be lost before you can even leave the port. What time do you need to be back at Marseille airport?

I do not think a one-night trip that far is practical.

I'm afraid that for such an extreme situation that cheapest and fastest are mutually exclusive.

The only reasonable way to make this plan work is to have a limousine waiting at the dock for you to take you to a private jet which can take you Ciampino airport where a second car is ready to take you to Vatican City.

Do the same in reverse the next day.

Sleep as close as you can to Vatican City.

Do you want to see the Pope, or do you want to visit St Peter's Basilica or do you want to visit the Vatican Museums and try to see the Sistine Chapel?

Different things happen in Vatican City on different days of the week. Which days are we talking about here? Are you aware of which days His Holiness Pope Francis leaves Rome?

On the face of it, you will spend as much, if not more waking hours, in transit, vs being in Vatican City.

The 90 minute flight may look tempting, but its the time for all the other activities attendant to flying that are the killer.

Hotel Aberdeen in Rome would give you easy access to FCO and the Metro to get to the Vatican and is well above a 'roach motel' category
