Arrive Rome Saturday, week before EAster. Three days in Rome, two days in Sorrento, leaving early Thursday for l night in Florence, then head to Rome Friday and leave Saturday morning. Planning to take the train to accomplish this. Do I buy a Pass for the train? What advice do you have, especially since I will be going into Rome on Good Friday?
Grace, you don't need a railpass in Italy. P2P is less expensive. For your Rome to Florence journey, 53 trains a day make this run. Many are non-stops (1hr.40min). There is an 18Euro extra supplemental fee for riding on the Eurostar trains with your Eurail pass. P2P including the seat reservation is 39Euro. Buy your tickets when you get there. Use one of the many electronic ticket machines in the Rome Termini train station. They will prompt you in English and will accept your American credit card.
On your trip to Sorrento, you will most likely ride the private Circumvesuviana train from Naples. This train system does not accept the Eurail pass.
The general consensus on this site is that train travel in Italy is relatively in-expensive and it's best to just buy place to place tickets. At least that is all the advice I have gotten about train travel in Italy.
Have Fun!
Rome on Easter weekend? Whew, I hope you have hotel reservations.
