I notice that Iceland Air is increasing their carry-on allowance from 13 to 22 pounds as of April 1. What are the odds that there will be a fare increase associated with it? Any thoughts?
There may be a fare increase but seriously doubt if it will be related to luggage weight. Fares go up, fares go down.
Iceland Air has been a little unreasonable in the past on carry-ons. Making customers check their luggage has been their little racket. 22 pounds is also not really that good, either. There again, letting their customers do a stopover in Iceland is a positive for both travelers and the Icelandic economy.
Twenty-two pounds is excellent and easy to make.
I think it is more an adjustment to continue to attract customers than cover for a price increase. Not that prices will not increase, they probably will (oil is going up) but Iceland Air several years ago decided to be a European main carrier, while promoting stays in Iceland. Not a bad idea, but lowered demand and a sort of "done that" attitude among travellers is maybe making them look for other selling points.
So, I wonder how strict they'll be if plans are made now for travel in September (i.e., will they let 22 pounds slide then if the ticket is purchased now - technically, with the 13 lb limit?). Hmmm....
