Fall/winter airfare sale London

I received two different “alerts” today about a fare sale to London leaving from multiple cities across the nation. American, Delta, British Airways were all showing their cheapest fares at around $500 RT.

If you are thinking of traveling next Sept-Dec you may want to check prices.

Thank you for this info.

I am flying to London next October and flying home from Lisbon. I can go either Delta or American and have been keeping my eye on the fares, Having a terrible time making up my mind.

I will check out the fares this weekend.

@Bostonphil. I picked two random dates in October and plugged in your flights. Nonstop Austin to London on BA and 1 stop return from Lisbon on American came out to $900 RT main cabin. Is that the same prices you have been seeing or better?

Hi Carol,

With American, I have gotten about a little less than $1,000 before insurance but I will also have to pay to pick a seat on BA in advance. Have no idea how much picking a seat in advance is going to cost but my very vague memory is that it was about $35 in 2019 (pre-COVID)

Delta has been more like $1,200 before insurance but I do not have to pay to pick seats in advance. And it seems that I get more food on Delta. Delta will be putting me on Virgin and responders have been saying that Virgin is really fun to fly on.

I am going to check this weekend but I need to make a decision.

Hi Claudia

I am getting excited about my trip and cruise. Have begun to pick shore excursions.

I have been exploring the area around Hotel 63. What area of London is my hotel in meaning West, East, North or South. I have begun to leaf through R S London but it is a lot of reading. I am going to take it with me.

I must make a decision about my flight and as you know, I have been asking for responses.

Responders really seem to like Virgin. They even say it is fun to fly on. And then there are the adorables salt and pepper shakers. I wish that i could book a Virgin Atlantic cruise but they are very expensive.

Delta would be putting me on Virgin

I have decided that I need to decide this weekend.

Carol, I appreciate you posting this. We used miles for our trip to London this fall, but I’m going to check if there is a better deal.

Bostonphil, the terms North, South, East and West are not usually applied to London as a whole but rather to specific neighborhoods, such as the West End (which is west of the Theatre District and Covent Garden, both of which are west of the City of London), but the West End is not in the western portion of greater London.

Your Hotel 63 is a good choice. It is on Bayswater RoD which runs along the north side of Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park. I believe it is in the Paddington neighborhood. We often stay around there when in London for only a night or two. We like to use the number 148 bus, which runs right along Bayswater Road and the west side of Hyde Park to Victoria Station and then to Westminster Abbey. You can get off at Hyde Park Corner to change to an east-west bus such as the 9, or other bus.

Here is a schematic map of the central London bus routes and the popular sites they serve (I may have posted this for you before):

https://content.tfl.gov.uk/bus-route-maps/key-bus-routes-in-central-london.pdf

The bus is less expensive than the Underground and offers the advantage of sightseeing along the way, plus step-free access (as long as you sit on the lower level) and less walking to find a convenient pickup point. It is slower for long distances, but not for short ones.

Hi Lola,

I do like bus 148. Hotel 63 is very close to a tube station. I think that it is Lancaster Gate and right there on the street outside the tube is a bus stop. I bet that is where I pick up the 148.

I have been doing a lot of researching and exploring the area around Hotel 63 as well as London.

When I go to Southampton, should I go to Victoria Station and take. the coach or train? Or should I go to Waterloo?

I am reminded some years back that I met a woman on the bus here in Austin and we got to talking. She was a tourist and when she traveled, she took local buses just to see a city. She said that it was the best way to see a city, "take the local transportation"

Of. course, London is way too big to take all the local buses but it is a great way to sightsee.

I am shocked.

I checked American Airlines again and my round trip air has gone up about $100 but Delta has gone UP about $700. At first I thought that I had to be reading the fares incorrectly

When I last checked Delta for my trip, it was about $1,200 and now it is about $1,900.

I guess that I am flying American

I am going back to American and see how much it is with points plus cash

Boston Phil. What are your dates? I got $900 for your route for random May dates. If we know the real dates, we may be able to help you find better fares.

Hi Carol

I am flying from Austin TX to London on October 7th and that is not a problem. Fares are reasonable for both American and Delta.

It went up a little bit on American and if I fly American, I am going to be put on BA to London. That means I will want / need to go to BA and pay something to pick out my seat in advance.

Returning, I am flying from Lisbon to Austin TX on October 27th. Fare is acceptable on American but it went up $700 on Delta. It is now about $1,900 on Delta without insurance.

However later on, I went back to Delta and typed in October 28th and the fare was $1,200. This is what it had been when I used October 27th last week.

I feel that I need to make a decision today, Sunday.

I can fly non stop Austin to London but I have to make at least one stop Lisbon to Austin. With American, I am hoping to take the plane where I change in Philadelphia and with Delta, I am hoping to take the plane where I change in Boston.

Delta, Lisbon to Austin on October 27 must be selling out . Maybe a travel service reserved several seats.

If I choose Delta on October 28, I will spend an extra night in Lisbon which is acceptable. An extra. night in a hotel is a lot less than an extra $700 for airfare.

BostonPhil- if you buy your flights through British Airways and connect through London on the way home, the roundtrip fare for your dates is $907.05. I know you are concerned about seat fees, but I think that these would be $100 or less. You can use AARP discount to reduce price further.

Your itinerary listed purchased through American is showing at 1294. It would be the same flight on the way over and connect through Philadelphia on the way home. $300 is a lot of money just to connect through Philadelphia……….

Hi Carol

I book through American or Delta because I have credit cards that are partnered with them. I believe that I get two rewards per dollar spent at American and unsure with Delta but I do get rewards for every dollar spent. This will go towards my next trip. Often I have been able to fly free because of rewards and I am working towards that for the next trip.

I get one free checked bag with both airlines. And there may be other freebies or reduced costs.

When I last checked American, my fare was $1110.25 with insurance.

I prefer the convenience of flying from Lisbon to Philadelphia . I will go through security / immigration in Philadelphia and maybe be done with it.

I do not like connecting at Heathrow to begin with but I would also have to go through immigration at Heathrow and later in Austin.

I, also, checked out BA and my connection between flights was only 1 1/2 hours. I could not do that.

Of course, I also have to go through security in Lisbon no matter what brand I use.

If push comes to shove, and I wanted to fly Delta, I could stay the extra night in Lisbon. Not a bad thing to have to do.

Also I have a Jet Blue card and Southwest card. I could book round trip to and from Boston on rewards. And then from Boston, book to London and from Lisbon at a lot less money going on Delta or American.

I have a lot of credit cards (too many) because I took promotions.

UPDATE: So I found that I can do round trip Delta to and from Boston. Then Delta Boston to London and Lisbon to Boston, every flight non stop, for about $1400,00 including insurance. Better than $1,900.

I think I am going to do the deed today (book flights) after resting some.

I have to get it over with.

Everyone has their own needs and preferences. I would encourage you that after you book your tickets, take a break from watching flights/fares. Book and don’t look back.

Carol,

That sounds like very good advice. it is going to be such a load off of my mind whatever I decide.

I am going to take a nap before I "do the deed" ie. book my airfare.
