Extra rental car fees for drivers over 70 in UK?

We're in the preliminary stages of planning a trip to the UK next May, looking at a week in London followed by a couple weeks in southern England (Brighton, Canterbury, Cornwall) and the Cotswolds. We are debating car rental vs. public transportation vs. tour. The driver will be over 70 and I've read on Rick's blog it can be difficult for senior drivers to rent in the UK. I've also read several forum posts saying there isn't so much difficulty as extra fees for extra required insurance for those over 70 or 75. If it's too much hassle or cost, we'll probably book a tour. Anyone have recent experiences or insight? Thanks!

Circumstances differ greatly depending on when and where you are hiring a car. There are many websites where you can check hire prices and this will give you a base to compare public transport prices. Hiring a car will give you far more flexibility than a tour.

We rented a car last year in Scotland when I was 70. There were no extra charges or restrictions.

Check with the various car hire companies. Enter your info including your correct age in the online rental form and see what the prices come out to be. Then enter the same rental info but with a younger age. Compare.
