Extending night-train sleeper reservations.

I have a reserved private sleeper car from Vienna to Florence in combination with my Eurail pass first week in May. Instead of disembarking in Florence at 06:18 I would now like to continue on to the end of the line in Rome at 09:15. Can I just pay for the difference in Vienna before boarding or is there a way for me to extend that over-night reservation before I leave the States? I would like to ensure that no one else reserves my sleeper car for the last 3 hours. I cannot imagine someone taking a sleeper car for 3 hours between 6am and 9, but you never know.
Thank-you all.

The surcharge for the sleeper portion is the same regardless of the length of your trip, i.e. Vienna to Florence or Vienna to Rome. You've "rented" the accommodations for the night. However, you would have to pay the extra rail fare from Florence to Rome.

Why can't you imagine it? I could imagine a group of teens or 20 somethings pulling an all night and grabbing a 3 hour nap before starting the next day. I could imagine a family with young children gingerly putting a toddler in the stroller at 5 am wheeling it to the train station and then putting child into a bed on the train. With the adults grabbing some rest as well. Not saying demand would be high, but yes I could imagine it.

However, you would have to pay the extra rail fare from Florence to Rome. Since Patrick has a pass, it should cover the base fare for the extension from Florence to Rome just like it will for Vienna to Florence. (It certainly would have covered it if he had booked reservations for Vienna-Rome to begin with.) Patrick, It would be a good idea for you to contact the agency that sold you the supplement for the sleeper and find out from them if your sleep will be "undisturbed."

I thank-you all for your help. I do have a Eurail Pass in full effect the day I arrive in Italy on the over-night, so the train ticket itself was not a concern. I did not know that the sleeper is bought for the whole length of the route. That news helps me feel better. Eurorailways told me I should return the private sleeper ticket and pay for an exchange fee in reticketing for the full length to Rome. If my pass covers the day's journey in Italy and the private sleeper car is bought for the whole route's length, why should I return my ticket to them and pay an additional fee? Can I just inform the booking office at Wien-Meidling that I will be in my sleeper the whole way to Rome? Any further suggestions would be welcome.
Thank-you

Listen to Tim, you do not have the use for the 6-9 am. There is a chance someone would disturb you. Exchange the reservation supplement for the correct one.

I will talk to a station agent in Vienna before I board the train and state I wish to stay in the sleeper all the way to Rome. I am reluctant to mail my sleeper supplement back to Eurorailways at this time because I leave for Europe in less than a month. It may very well be sent back to me correctly amended way before then but, knowing my luck, it may not. In addition, if I have to give up the sleeper in Florence I'm okay with that. My plans are flexible enough.
Thanks to you all.

The sleeping bunk will not be available for anyone else to use it from 6-9. The cabin will remain in sleeper mode until Rome, with the bunks down and the conductor serving breakfast. They do not rent an already used bunk until sheets are changed and new toiletries are installed. My advice is this: Try to check with an agent in Vienna and explain your desire to extend the trip. They will have you pay any fee difference.

Patrick, I agree with your plan, but I don't think you will have a problem. I think that that compartment is yours for the duration of the train's run. Today, night trains leave their starting stations and only take on passengers until about 1 AM, then run until about 4 AM, then start discharging only. Go on any website and look for Florence to Rome and you won't find that train shown. You can't book a compartment just from Florence to Rome. If you go on the CNL website, you will find that the Aufpreis, supplement for compartments is the same, independent of the length of the trip. You can book Paris to Munich, or Paris to Stuttgart, or Saarbrücken to Munich, or Saarbrcken to Stuttgart, but you can't book Paris to Saarbrücken or Stuttgart to Munich.
