Experience with Trenitalia smartphone app?

Has anyone used the Trenitalia app to purchase tickets and ride trains in Italy recently? (I understand purchasing international tickets can be more complex, but we will be travelling completely within Italy)

It is not that difficult to purchase tickets from the machines in most rail stations, but using an app can be even easier, and possibly quicker.

An online search suggests this app was not very user-friendly a few years ago, but now I understand it has been completely redesigned.

Any recent experience?

It works; get the one for Italotren the other rail company rival to trenitalia high speed rail service also

Both store the data of your ticket so it will stay on the ap if you run out of data or have no internet

Though not recent, we used the app quite a bit during an anniversary trip to Florence a few years ago. Loved it. Found it easy to use and particularly enjoyed not having to worry about validating paper tickets.
