Experience with a Vauxhall Insignia Automobile?

We are renting a car at Heathrow - 4 adults. They indicated the car is a 4-door, with a hatch trunk - will seat 5 passengers and carry 2 large suitcases plus 1 small one. Each of us will have one bag - the smallest Rick Steves with wheels and each have one small carry on. I'm thinking that with the trunk room and that they say it will seat 5 passengers, we should be OK space-wise. It's so hard to know if you will fit. Any experience with this type of car? How can you determine this ahead of time? Thanks.

If you ever watch a British police show, the Police cars are Vauxhall Astras I believe. (for the unfortunate officers that don't get BMW's) That will give you some idea of the size. If you do get there and the car that they want to give you won't fit your luggage, ask to see something else. Every year when I visit my grandma, I order a standard car, which they have always run out of, and try to give me a "full size" Mustang. I have to explain that my 87 y/o grandmother wouldn't be able to get in our out of a Mustang. Then they will give me some sort of large 4-door.

First of all, you're not getting that car, more than likely. It's an example of the type/class of car. All the cars vary. We generally travel with the same luggage - - sometimes it fits in the thrunk, sometimes it doesn't. I'm guessing that, at absolute best, you're going to get three suitcases and a carry-on in the trunk. One suitcase is going to be on the back seat jammed into the middle space that might fit a skinny kid - -it'll be pushing into both people's hips. There will be a couple of carry-on's on top of it and one on the floor around the hump that keeps falling over. Hang your purses on the exterior mirrors and stick the lunch sack on the dashboard so the cheese melts. Remember, this is the best case. Also, double-check that everybody showers daily. Or get a big sedan or a small van.

Well, that's a bit of concern. I was trying to get a reasonable mid-size car that we would fit into. We invited my cousin and her friend to go with us (but we're paying for the car). This ups the trip expense quite a bit beyond if it was just my husband and myself. Guess I'll have to relook at the size car because we want to fit comfortably. Thanks.

I agree with Ed - four suitcases are not going to fit in a "hatch trunk". My son and I (alone) had a similar car on our last trip. We each had a 21" bag and a small carryon. We could not get both larger bags in the trunk. We could have gotten one bag and the carryons in the trunk, but we needed those during the days, so we had one bag in the trunk and one on the back seat, along with our two carryons. There is no way that twice the number of people and twice the number of bags could have fit in that car. I'm a little curious how you think you can get 8 bags into a trunk that fits 2 large and one small bag.

The bags we are taking are smaller than we normally take and our carry ons are small. I had thought we could fit a reasonable amount into the trunk (since the rental car agency said 2 large suitcases and 1 small one) and that we could put 1 bag and a carry-on between us. From all your feedback, I think I was offbase.

English cars are smaller than USA cars and the trunks are small. With 4 people, the two in the backseat are going to have a miserable time (wrapped around and under the excess bags). Re-read Ed's post - he hit the nail on the head Get a much bigger car

Very good move Sharon. The Vauxhall would have been totally unsuitable. My daughter drives an Astra and I know from experience, it struggles to cope with a large case and a couple of carry ons in the boot (or trunk in your case)

An Astra is about half the size of an Insignia. The size of an Insignia is comparable to BMW 5-series and Mercedes E-class. If you want to be sure your luggage will fit, go for a wagon instead of a sedan/hatchback.
