Hello! I am checking prices weekly in anticipation of our trip from Seattle to London next fall. The flight that works best for us seems to be the Virgin Atlantic flight, non-stop, on a Boeing 787-9.
I am looking for personal experience and opinions as to the difference between Economy Classic and Economy Delight. Both offer 1 free checked bag and free seat selection.
Is there really much difference in your experience between the two? I've looked at Seat Guru, but would love your thoughts.
other posts here have indicated that seat guru is defunct, any info is old info...
We have flown a number of times from SFO to London on Virgin Atlantic. The first time a few years back we were in Economy Classic. The person in front of me reclined his seat the whole time and I felt like I was imprisoned in my seat. The video screen was at such an angle that I couldn't see much without distortion. I was miserable as you can imagine.
I swore I would not fly with VA again After that flight we switched our return flight to Economy Delight, and we were happy. Subsequently we have flown a couple more times with VA Economy Delight and have also been happy. A good deal more legroom. All were on 787s. Food etc, same as Classic and seats within economy section. I am 6 ft, on the thin side. It is certainly worth the usually couple hundred more on a long flight.
We have now switched to flying Premium Economy which is a different more upgraded product. Initially our motivation was to get 2 across seat configuration, IE window and aisle together as an extra covid protection. We have not flown Premium on VA yet so I can't comment on their Premium product. But this can be very expensive on some flights, so I still may consider Economy Delight an acceptable alternative if not available. but I will not fly economy again. But your tolerance for discomfort may be different than mine.
I've taken that flight out of Seattle a few times, and really do enjoy flying Virgin Atlantic. Economy Delight is a tad nicer than regular Economy. The difference in leg room is noticeable, and it's nice to be able to use the Premium check-in lines and the earlier boarding and exiting of the plane (before the regular economy folks) is helpful if you're in a hurry to get off the plane and make a connection or train. I also like the separate, smaller cabin of Economy Delight, as it's generally quieter. Where you won't see a difference (at least not noticeable) is in the seat itself (they look different from the Economy seats, but I didn't feel like the seat itself was more or less comfortable than Economy) and the food.
Something to look at too, is splitting your cabin choices. My last flight this past August on VA out of Seattle, it was cheaper to do one leg in Premium and one leg in Economy Delight, than a round trip in Economy Delight. Not sure if that was just a quirk of the pricing at that time or if that is generally true, but something to play around with, whether it's Premium or if you split between Economy Delight and Economy (I generally choose the more comfortable of the two classes I'm looking at, for the Seattle - London leg as I want to arrive as rested as possible, whereas coming home, couldn't care less).
Enjoy Virgin Atlantic, you'll be well fed and cared for on their flights (at least that's been my experience)!
What I find odd is the configuration. There are 4 of us, I was planning on doing 3 seats on the side, with the 4th person across the aisle in the center section. But the center section is Economy Classic. To do all 4 in Economy Delight we would need 1 person to sit behind us. I'm definitely leaning toward Delight though. I appreciate the responses.
Volunteer to be the person behind and the problem is solved……..
We flew Economy Delight on VA this past Sept from Heathrow to SF non-stop and it was much more comfortable than Economy as others explained. The food was not good though. Bring your own, lol.
I too really liked Virgin Atlantic, the service & the friendliness. I've flown every class of service over the years, including Economy Delight. I recall thinking it wasn't that great of a seat, other posters mentioned the same, but there are other perks. IMO, the only negative is the level of music played, at check-in, boarding, taxiing, & landing. I had to ask the man checking us in to turn DOWN the music, it was pretty loud. If noise sensitive, carry ear plugs & a high quality set of headphones like Bose.
