Exercising while travelling

Hey Guys and Gals. Big Mike from Boone County here.

So flying home last week there was a Tim Tebow ripped guy in one of those long sleeve tight shirts. Twice on the 90 minute flight he dropped in the aisle for what I counted as 100 real pushups. He was not one of those Hans and Franz girly men. It seemed he was daring someone to say something.

Anyway, my friends, my Hot Wife was wondering how many steps one could get in during an overseas flight of 8 or so hours without being overly annoying. She looks REAL good for 57 due to working out and getting 10,000 plus steps daily. I guess aisle pushups etc is a bit much, but getting in some steps might be doable. What do y'all think?

BTW Mary is an Ohio University alum. Any other Bobcats out there?

Well good friends of ours emigrated from England to Canada in 1978 and swear their 8-year old son walked the whole way. Up and down the aisle for the entire flight.

I always lose a kilo or 2 on vacations from walking during the time I would normally be sitting in a cubicle or driving somewhere and never walking like a lot of people do.

I get all the exercise I need when traveling by walking around for hours, climbing every castle, church tower and pile of old rocks that I see, shoveling pasta into my mouth, and licking gelato. On the plane I watch a movie and get some sleep.

Don't know who Tim Tebow is, nor care. To each their own. Vive la difference.

I think people walking constantly in the aisles would become annoying in about 5 minutes. The flight crew would be put out, to say the least. Exercise on the ground before and after.

Most of the time, you don't walk down the aisles on a plane, you stumble over outstretched feet, wobble as the plane moves, and annoy others when you encroach on their very limited space when you have to pass someone else. That's about as much exercise as waiting in line.

I agree....this would be sooooo annoying....either the push-ups or the constant up/down the aisles by the same person.

I admit to doing a few a bit of a stretch of my legs when returning to my seat from restroom visits....usually a SLIGHT lunge forward or 3-4 stands while lifting up my foot to raise my knee.....just to move my flamingo-like long legs a bit before returning to the seat....but I might just spend 2 minutes doing this very, very quietly. Other times, if the flight attendants give permission I might do this in the galley area (if large enough) and if they are totally finished with their meal service, etc. (usually at the quiet times when baskets of snacks are left out for passengers).

I have seen a passenger of two do a whole loop of the plane, quietly walking, and I think that is fine....sometimes one has to sort of loop just to make one's way to a restroom.

But, gosh, let's not turn the aisles of a plane into a gym :o Do the dash or major stretching in the airport while waiting for your connecting flight.

Qantas claims it is planning a non-stop dominion service between London and Sydney which would have a gym on board. Perhaps by 2022. Or perhaps not.

Walking is necessary for some to prevent circulation issues, but they need to be mindful of others. I especially hate having people grab the seatbacks as they pull themselves out of seats or lean on each one as they walk by. I had a guy dig his fingernails into my head once, and of course, he was oblivious. A hundred pushups is just showing off.

I find I get more than enough exercise while on vacation, usually average 8 miles a day. Sometimes I return home having lost a few pounds despite eating anything and everything. Add me to the list of people who find the constant aisle walkers annoying, though perhaps they have a medical reason for doing so. Or the people practicing yoga in the area near the toilets--are they waiting for their turn or just taking up space?

Hi all -

As a permanently medicated, previous DVT sufferer, it's quite important for me to move about at least a couple of times during long haul/transatlantic flights. I usually head to the rear galley to do some lunges and stretches and (so far) none of the air crews have objected to my doing a bit of gentle callisthenics! And it minimises problems for fellow passengers, although the three women passengers necking a bottle of champagne and chatting in the galley on my last long haul trip were a little confused by my 'failed karate kid' poses!

I also wear flight socks and do the recommended leg exercises (these are often printed in the inflight magazine) while watching the inflight entertainment. But yeah, 100 push ups really is just showing off!

Your Mr. Push Ups man seems a bit lazy. Surely there are more exercises he could be doing on the plane. Use opposite seats and lift himself up and do a parallel bar routine. Pull down a few suitcases and lift weights. In fact, he could make himself useful at the end of a flight and pull down everyone's luggage.

I sometimes will do some light stretching while waiting for the toilet. Now I think I'll put my foot up on a headrest for a really good stretch. If I can't manage that maybe I'll just use my neighbor's tray table.

Thanks for telling us about him. I'm glad to have the opportunity to make fun of him, because he deserves it.

Is there a class somewhere for airplane yoga?

To be fair he was "the man" helping a couple of folks out with overhead bin luggage. Even that though was showoffy. I wondered where he got the skin tight long sleeve shirt. Not that I could pull it off sad to say...

How "hot" a woman is or is not is of no interest to THIS woman. Tim Tebow however? Yes please. :-)

I'll be doing a bunch of chair exercises I learned from my physical therapist as sitting on a plane for 8 hours to Europe and 9 hours from Europe is not good for my back.

In my freshman year in college, my roommate and I were Hans & Franz for Halloween. Very timely thread, Mike!
