Hello-
I'm just trying to figure out the train system and what would be the best train tickets to buy…….with that said, i have nothing wrote in stone on where we want to go.
We know we want to go to Amsterdam (ann frank house), then Bavaria (castle), and to Krakow, Poland.
I am having a hard time figuring out how to get from Germany to Poland.
Can anyone help me with this.
I'm not sure the exact dates or how long. Just info on the trains is all i'm looking for,
Thanks
You can go to www.eurail.com/plan-your-trip and find out about buying a Eurail pass, choose the routes and trains you want, and how to make train reservations for the trains you want. You can go by train from Berlin to Warsaw to Krakow or you can add the wonderful city of Prague and go from Berlin to Prague, visit Prague, then go from Prague to Krakow.
If those are your 3 destinations, you may want to look at flights. The German railway site has most of the European train schedules. www.bahn.com This is showing about a 12 hour train ride from Munich to Krakow with a few changes. That's is long enough to make me opt for an airplane. Even Amsterdam to Munich is 8 to 9 hours with a very efficient German rail route.
bahn.com is also usually the best place to buy tickets for rail journeys starting or ending in Germany. If you only want to see those three places, buying discounted single-journey rail tickets in advance (usually go on sale 92 days before travel) will almost always be cheaper nowadays than buying a pass.
thank you for all the info!
Shanan, If "just info on the trains" is what you want, click here. This website ("The Man in seat 61") is the best guide to train travel on the web.
Note also there is no such company as "Eurotrain". The trains are run by lots of different companies.
Shanan,
I agree with Sam that flights would probably be your best option for the places you've mentioned. Using only the three places you mentioned, something like this might work.....
- Amsterdam to Krakow (flight - have a look at LOT Polish Airlines as they will probably be the cheapest).
- Krakow to Munich (flight - again check LOT Airlines)
As you'll note on the bahn.de website, the rail journeys are all 12-16 hours or more on those routes with multiple changes. If you have more time and some flexibility, rail travel will work if you can add some intermediate stops into the longer rail journeys, so as to keep the travel time for each leg at a manageable level.
Good luck with your planning!
Transportation connections will need to be part of your research at some point, but that research will be more efficient the more you can firm up your wish list of destinations. Certainly, comparing the value of a rail pass is highly dependent on the specific distances and countries of travel.
There is train service from Germany to Poland, but some departures have additional connections or may be served by bus this year, due to construction on the lines. Therefore, dates can make a difference, e.g., if you're planning for next year.
For an overview of train travel time and full-fare, 2nd class ticket prices, see Rick’s Train Travel Time & cost Map. You can get significant train ticket discounts on your remaining routes starting about 3 months before the planned travel dates. To compare flights, try www.skyscanner.com.
