Hi Donald, I purchased my ticket a few days ahead of time. There are enough trains that if one is sold out, the next best time won't be.

When are you traveling? Buy the tickets when you get there.

There ought to be plenty of seats when you are there. We traveled for 2 weeks by train last Sept and never had a problem getting a seat. Remember, European train travel ain't like the US! It's a very usable transportation system.

If you go to http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html you can see that on your travel date there are hourly trains.

Donald, there are numerous Eurostars that depart for Venice Santa Lucia from Florence Santa Maria Novella daily. The trip takes 2h 45m and costs 24.70 Euro for 2nd class. You should have no problems buying the ticket a few days in advance in the Florence SMN station. You will need seat reservations but you get this with the ticket. You can easily buy this ticket on the ticket machines with your credit card if you wish. It's rare that these trains all fill up. If by chance 2nd class if full, step up to 1st class.

For what its worth, the same applies to Florence-Rome Eurostar. Last September I bought a ticket in Termini station the night before and there were plenty of seats and trains available. It was around 30 Euros.
