Eurostar Train help

We are flying into Zurich, staying 1 night planning on taking eurostar from Zurich to Como and Ferry to Varenna, staying 2 nights , train from Varenna to Civitavechhia for cruise

I have been on swiss rail site , seems easy enough.

If I book on the site , Can I get seat assignments???

Heard there were issues with Trenatalia , not easy to book.

The part that has me uneasy is changing trains at Termini.

Any advice 1st or 2nd class, We will have luggage.

We have never traveled on a Eurostar train only , IC trains , very crowded from Livorno to florene and Civit to Rome

Please help with any info

Thanks!!!

As I am aware Eurostar train goes from Paris to London and vice versa also Brussels to London and back. I don't think it goes anywhere close to Zurich.

Ilja, there is a class of train in Italy, called the Italian Eurostar, symbol ES*. It includes the fastest train in Italy and they are more expensive than ICs and reguire a surcharge when using a railpass. Tickets include a seat reservation. I don't know if they go to Zurich, but they definitely go all over Italy, including from Florence to Rome.

Partial answers -- Trenatalia generally does not accept Am credit cards but recently there are reports that they are working. Other than missing some discounts, there is no advantage to advance reservations on Italian train.

What issues of changing trains at Termini other than a long walk to the Civit.. train? It is a huge terminal but straight forward. The run to Civit is basically a commuter run with 3 to 4 trains an hour.

Obviously there is some advantage to keeping your luggage light or down to one bag per person.

We rarely find any advantage to first class. It will be less crowded.

Sorry, under google Eurostar I didn't find it but it is under Eurostar Italia even it has nothing to do with Eurostar from London. Lee, thank you for correcting me. We are always learning.

Direct trains from Zurich to Como S. Giovanni are EuroCity trains, not EuroStar Italia trains. Seat reservations are required and are included in the price of the ticket.

When you make the reservation . Is an exact seat assigned like the airlines or just a guarantee.

Thanks for your responses

When you are assigned a seat, it will be a specific number in a specific coach. The seat numbers in the coach are permanent, but, they can't guarantee which direction the coach will be facing, so the seat might be facing forward or back, depending.

We rode that train last June. Second class was fine. On the SBB site, you will be offered a choice of type of seats: window or aisle, table or not. Your ticket will designate the car number and seat number. If you buy on SBB and get a number as confirmation, you will need that number to pick up the actual ticket from an agent in Switzerland before you board the train.
