Eurorail Passes and the Rhine River

I purchased a 3 day eurorail pass. When I get to Vienna I want to take a river trip to Budapest. I heard you can use a eurorail pass sometimes...do they charge a day off the eurorail pass or can you just flash it and get on the boat?

In general, Eurail passes offer DISCOUNTS on some boats just by having the railpass, and also allow you free travel on others on days when you are USING a day of the pass. Rarely, if ever, do you get free travel just for HAVING the pass.

Go to www.eurail.com to see what they offer for Austria. It looks to me like just having the pass gives you a 20% discount (not free travel) on a few boat trips.

I know that on the Rhine in Germany you can ride the river boats for free with Eurail (just show it, don't need tickets) but it DOES cost a day of the pass. In general, something that is discounted by Eurail does not cost a day, but something free with Eurail does.
