Should I buy insurance from the cruise company or a company that specializes in trip insurance?
I’ve not done a cruise but when I did tours with a company that also offered insurance I usually purchased it independently. I just felt I might have a better experience if I did the choosing.
Do you know which company the cruise line uses for insurance?
If it's Allianz, I would take it.
I purchased through travelex for our boat & bike trip. My husband is having hip pain and cannot ride, so he had to cancel. I am still going.
Submitted via email to them. They needed proof i paid for the trip and a doctors form. Approved the claim within 3 days of getting the dr form.
Underwritten by Birkshire Hathaway.
I would buy from Allianz or Travelez. The reviews i head were positive for these 2.
My guess is that it's likely cheaper if you do it yourself. Have you checked for any travel insurance that comes with your credit card that you paid the trip with? It might give you adequate coverage. Whichever insurance provider you choose, remember to read the details first to make sure it covers you for the concerns you have.
*take note that "cancel for any reason" insurance doesn't actually mean that.
I found the insurance through the cruise company was way more expensive than selecting my own policy. And with the cruise line insurance they would not refund the cruise cost if you canceled, only give you a credit to be used within one year. That was not acceptable as my husband had stage 4 cancer.
We have always purchased our travel insurance independently of the cruiseline and tour companies.
There are companies that specialize in trip insurance. We like tripinsurancestore.com Browse the website but call them on the phone before you make any decisions. They have always been helpful to us.
There are others that people like, too. Squaremouth is another I see often recommeded.
