We'd like to get a GPS for Europe so we don't waste our time being lost as we have done in the past. Any advice on how to get or rent one? Is it easy to get one through security in a carry on? Thanks,
Chris
After getting lost in Munich for hours several years ago, we rent one from the car rental agency anytime we rent a car! My husband has also bought a Europe chip for his Garmin that we're going to bring when we go to Italy later this month.
Thanks, we have a Garmin too. I'll look into what a chip will cost.
I bought a European card/chip on Craig's List for about $40. The Garmin web site wanted over 4X that amount on their web site! I always carry my GPS & cord in my carry-on bag and have NEVER had it questioned or even removed for a closer inspection. Good travels & don't forget to bring a small map/atlas also.
We picked up a Garmin Nuvi 275 on Amazon for $127 recently. It comes with both Europe and US maps. I'd say price buying a new device with both maps before you spend a lot to buy Europe maps for an old device.
We also bought a Garmin with European maps on Amazon for the same price that Brad mentioned. It has served us well on several trips.
We also purchased a Nuvi 275 with Europe maps loaded for around $140.00 last summer. To buy Europe maps to load onto our 3 year old Garmin was $99. Plus the new garmin shows traffic ahead as well as police radar alerts. The traffic ahead feature helped to avoid a 1 hour delay on the Autobahn after we'd left the airport. We had the pleasure of driving through the countryside on the back roads until we bypassed the traftic.
