European car models

Can anyone tell me if 6 adults with luggage will fit comfortably in a Ford S-Max, a Ford Galaxy 5Dr/7PSGR or a Peugeot 807? All 3 models are described as 7 passenger "minivans" which suggests we should have enough room. We will be driving for 2 weeks through France and we can try to go light on luggage but we don't want to be squeezed in.

I recommend you Google the car names and look at the pictures. I did the Ford S-Max and the pictures tell me there isn't much room for 6 people plus luggage. For all questions like this, I go to Gemut.com. They are experts on car rental and can be very helpful. Andy is the person to talk to.

No. With the rear seats up, there's not enough room for six carry-ons. You say you'll 'try' to go light, so you'll have even more. They're generally configured as 2-3-2 so the three people in the middle seat are bumping butts the whole time. If you're in hills, your tonnage is going to be too high to maintain speed. If its warm, you'll enjoy the other person's sweat. A nine-pax model would do it, but I'm thinking those might require a chauffer's permit of some kind. You'll need two cars, a small one and a larger one. If you get two small ones, there's going to be loose luggage in the rear seats.

Yes to the Peugeot 807. Six of us rented a Peugeot 807 for a tour in Provence prior to doing a barge trip. We were all traveling with Rick Steves style bags or soft sided luggage and back packs. There was enough room in the vehicle for us all of our luggage. The vehicle equipped with a diesel engine and a manual transmission had plenty of power. It took us up to the top of Mt. Ventoux with no problem. This is a much better option to renting two vehicles and trying to follow each other.

Remember that all your luggage has to go in the luggage area behind the last seat. Don't travel with loose luggage in the passenger compartment. If the unthinkable occurs and you are in an accident all the loose pieces of luggage become missiles aimed at the front seat riders. People have been killed that way. I speak from first hand experience having responded to car accidents. Please don't do it.
