Europe Honeymoon - May 26 - July 15

Hey Everyone,

I'm getting married on May 24th and going to Europe with my wife for our honeymoon. We are going to visit Rome, go on a cruise in the Mediterranean, then backpack a good portion of Europe. Although I haven't backpacked in Europe before, my (soon to be) wife has. We both love to travel and have come up with this as our itinerary.

I wanted to know, for those of you who have traveled Europe extensively, do you think this is a good itinerary? We will be traveling with the Eurail Global pass. Where would you make improvements/changes? What advice do you have? Is there a place along the route that you know of that you thought was particularly romantic, but moderately priced? I'd appreciate any input you have.

Thanks!

First I have to disagree with the poster who said everyone stays on the mainland.I dont believe that is true and staying in Venice is far better as Venice gets better when the daytrippers leave. I think two days is enough for Venice but wonder if you might want 2 days for the Cinque Terre. If you stay two nights that gives you a full day to hike or train to the 5 towns.

Looks like a pretty realistic, if a bit rushed, schedule for the most part. I couldn't comment on the Italian leg of your trip (I'll let people with more experience there offer their advice). My only suggestion is that with only one day in Normandy and without a car, you'll pretty much need to limmit yourself to one or two closely spaced destinations

That's a heck of a honeymoon trip - will there be any time left for romance?

I'll comment only on the Central European leg of this major trek. I would not spend more than two nights in Venice (romantic, yes, but unless you have booked accommodations there, most folks stay on the mainland). Also one overnighter in Salzburg, unless you use it as a base of ops (in which case you don't have to spend a night in Hallstadt, since it's a day trip). Spend an extra day in Vienna instead. It's got some great side trips - to Burgenland's natural preserve and wine region, up the Danube to the Wachau, a little Hungarian flavor in Sopron, etc.
Dachau is a suburb of Munich, so you don't have to allocate as much time (a KZ, what a place for honeymooners!) Mauthausen in Upper Austria is a better preserved, larger memorial, reached from Enns or Linz. Reutte has a long summer toboggan run you can't miss - what's more symbolic of your new marriage commitment than careening down a slippery slide?

What a wonderful honeymoon trip you have planned. You might want to think of two night in CT, so you can have a day to hike the trails and enjoy the evening there. After CT you will probably take a very early morning train for Venice. Venice is expensive but romantic and one of my most favorite cities. If you can afford it, you should try to stay in Venice and enjoy St. Mark's Square at night listening to the music in the outdoor cafes. Are you making reservations at youth hostels or just winging it?

Wow, how nice, such a lovely long honeymoon, good for you!!

Personal tastes and interests will of course play a role in how an iternary is planned.

I would take one night away from Florence( sorry, I found it a bit boring) and Venice( not boring, but I just think 2 nights are enough) and put them together and spend at least 3 or 4 nights at Cinqe Terra. I would view that as a holiday from travelling time, hiking, swimming and sunning oneself with no real " sites" to rush off to see each day.. that would be the perfect time to lie in bed till noon,, you are afterall on a honeymoon!

I have to agree with the other posters, I think it is kinda pointless to go all the way to CT just for 1 night. I would cut a day off Venice and a day off Florence or even cut another one off of Salzburg. You will want at least 2 if not 3 days for CT.

Florence can be done in 1 day if you start early and get reservations for the museums.

The only other thing I would suggest is that it is a little rushed, I know when I went for 5 weeks you need a day or two as Rick recommends for laundry and other stuff, and going from place to place will full sightseeing days can wear you out pretty quick. I have learned its better not to be rushed but really take the time and enjoy the places I'm seeing, plus I have to keep telling myself I can always go back, in fact I love Venice so much I'm going back, I leave tomorrow... yay

Looks like an exciting trip! You've given yourself more than a couple of nights in most destinations which is what we prefer. Have you considered the travel involved from Rothenburg to Burg Eltz to Reutte to Interlaken? Reutte might be better visited after Munich so you can get an early start to the castles. Although Rick raves about Burg Eltz, I wouldn't make a special trip north just for it.

We liked Venice after dark even though it was more expensive to stay--it was a romantic place at that time of night! Hallstatt was another one of our favourites to spend a night or two in--but that was before too many people knew about it!

Just a thought,Lauterbrunnen might be an alternative to Interlaken--closer to the action of Grindelwald and Gimmelwald--if you're not staying above the valley.

I really like York, too. Not sure how much time you'll have there with your travel from Bath and then to London. If you're not reserving accommodation well in advance, you can always adjust your schedule as you go.
