I had convinced myself that renting a car at the airport in Barcelona then heading to Figueres/ Cadaques would be too intense with the traffic around Barcelona........................WRONG. Trying to pickup the car on a saturday in Figueres was a disaster. I had contacted Europcar and informed them that due to train schedules I would be getting to figueres later than expected and was assured that all would be ok, wrong again. We got there after 2pm only to find the rental car office closed so after many phone calls and much fretting the station master at the tranin station was able to actually contact europcar and assured us we could get our car in Girona at the airport. So the train ticket to figueres was wasted plus we had to buy another to get to Girona etc.
The silver lining was that Oscar at the rental office in Girona was more than helpful and got us on our way with a minimum of trouble.

A good reminder to always double check rental agency hours when not at the airport (check with the actual office, not the online service). Many, as in this case, close early.
FYI - Traffic around Barcelona can get congested, but actually isn't too bad. Catalan drivers are extremely courteous.
