I am traveling with three other friends in Finland right now, and are leaving on Wednesday to travel through France, Italy, Switzerland, and possibly Germany. We are planning on buying eurail passes, but had been told we could just buy them at the train station, so we waited. Now I am wondering if that was a mistake on our part. Can we buy eurail tickets at the station either in Helsinki or Paris (where we start our trip)? Are we just going to have to reserve individual tickets from city to city? We are planning on visiting about 2 to 3 cities in each country for 2 days each. Thank you for any help!!
Check the response to Debbie's question about rail passes below. There is a link to eurail.com and it says you csn buy some passes in Europe but you will pay about 20% more. Sorry for the bad news!
Your not having passes may turn out to save you money. These days, passes are not always a good deal, particularly in Italy (where all but the regional trains require extra cost reservations), or France (where the fast trains require a supplement and have limited numbers of seats available for pass holders). If you post your planned itinerary, people can say if it's worth getting a pass at all (particularly since you have to pay more). I know for Switzerland, passes often are a good deal; it may pay you to get a pass for just this portion of your trip. Again, others here know all the details, so if you say where you're planning to go, you can get lots of tips.
Sasha: Okay thank you! I will check up on that link. Harold: Our travel itinerary goes as follows: Paris 2 days Nice 2 days Cinque Terre 2 days Rome 2 days Venice 2 days Gimmewald 2 days Interlakken 2 days Munich 1 day
Berlin 2 days We start in France, travel south to Nice, make a loop through Italy, travel North through Switzerland, and then go through Germany. We aren't quite sure if we will go through Germany, since it was kind of a last minute addition to our trip!
