I'm traveling from Barcelona --> Madrid, Madrid --> Seville and back. Thinking of getting the 3 days/2 months Eurail Spain Pass option, but does anyone know if I would actually be better off using RENFE's website and doing everything a la carte instead? Thanks!
If you are 60+ you can get some significant discounts using the RENFE Tarjeta Dorada.
Barcelona-Madrid can be had for as low as 46 Euro per person, second class, while Madrid-Sevilla are as low as 33 euro each way (first or Club class isn't worth it.) That compares to walkup fares of 115 and 81 Euro respectively. If you can commit to travel dates, check the RENFE site starting 62 1/2 days out to get the best chance at their "Web" specials...they're print at home tickets.
If you cannot commit to travel dates, then the Spain pass does make sense. You'll have to get reservations, but you can make them all at a Spanish railway station after you arrive, and reservation fees in Spain aren't all that expensive.
