Eurail Sleeper Question

My wife and I are planning on getting Eurail passes for a 3 week trip in December we'll be spending time in Prague, Munich, Vienna, Venice, Florence, Rome and Athens in that order. We would like to take the night trains on the legs from Munich-Vienna, and Vienna-Venice.

The question I have is; what sleeping accommodations does the Eurail "Select Pass" include? Ideally, we would like a 2-berth sleeper. If it is extra, how do we find out how much extra? The web hasn't been fruitful with this nugget of info. Any help is appreciated.

Matt, the Eurail Select Pass covers your transportation but not your accommodations. You probably pay a little for a seat on the train; you definitely pay for a sleeping accommodation. This is a "supplement", sometimes erroneously referred to as a "reservation" because with the supplement your accommodations are reserved.

Supplements are by the night, not by the distance. Generally, the supplement for a couchette in a 6 person compartment will run about $40; in a 4 person compartment around $50. A sleeper will run $100 or more. These are only rough numbers and are if purchased in Europe or by phone or online from one of the European national railroads. Supplements from a stateside seller, like RailEurope, will be appreciably higher.

As for Munich to Vienna, day trains make that trip in as little as 4+ hours, so a night train is hardly necessary. Additionally, you will probably need to take a local train to catch a night train (I couldn't find one direct from Munich to Vienna), and your actual time on the night train would hardly be enough for a good night's sleep.

To at least give you an idea... We had Eurail passes, and our night train was 30 Euro each for a 4 person couchette from Prague to Munich. That was in 2007, so it may have gone up a bit. We made our reservations through the DB website...

Note also for your journeys to Florence and Rome. Italy charges a seat reservation fee of 15E-20E on top of your Eurail pass for the Eurostar-class trains.

Matt:
One warning. Sleepers on the Vienna-Venice leg can sell out quickly. I was going to splurge on a single sleeper, but ended up in a four-bed compartment with South Korean students. And this was after I was flexible with my travel dates by a day either way. Book several days in advance.
