Hi I have a question about the 5 country eurail pass. I know that part of the stipulation is that you cannot take a train that travels through a county that is not part of your 5 chosen countries. I am interested in traveling from Munich, Germany to Interlaken, Switzerland. Does any one know if this train would travel through Austria (which is not one of our 5 chosen countries)? Thanks so much!
Some of the trains do, others do not. To find an itinerary that avoids Austria, you can check different departure times for the date in question at... http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en You will have to make at least 1 or 2 changes of train for this trip. When your possible itineraries finally pop up from the above search page, you can determine on your own whether a particular train invades Austria. 1.) Click on the arrow at the left of a given itinerary for details about changes of train. The itinerary will list connecting cities, of course, so toss it out if any are in Austria and move on to the next itinerary. 2.) Once you find an itinerary without Austrian stops, you can check the actual route on a map by scrolling down to click on "map" to see a graphic for where your train travels; a blue line shows the train route.
(cont.) 3.) With the itin. details showing, look under the "products" column on the right. The individual trains can be found there. For one itinerary between Munich and Interlaken, there are connections to be made in Ulm and Basel before reaching Interlaken. So when you click on the arrow for the schedule from Ulm to Basel, you'll click on the train number (like "IRE 3360" or something similar); any stops in between Ulm and Basel will also be shown. Now you can look at a map and probably deduce that trains between Ulm and Basel do not pass through Austria, but if you are not sure that a given train really skips Austria, then it's good to check the list of actual train stops. When you check the individual train stops, you only look at the stops BETWEEN Ulm and Basel (or whatever cities you change train in) since the train itself actually starts its journey well before Ulm and may continue beyond Basel, and all the stops before and after your part of the trip that are listed should be ignored.
Thanks so much! The information was very helpful!
