Eurail passes and the S Bahns

Are all S Bahns covered by a Eurail pass in Germany? The pass site says that they cover free travel on the S-Bahn trains "in major cities" (with some limits in Berlin) but are all S-Bahn trains equal? Is "S-Bahn" a "trademark" of DB or is it a general term like "light rail" that could be run by folks who don't honor Eurail? For example: the S-bahn from Mannheim to Speyer--is that a "major city" and covered. If no generalizations are possible, how can I find out which S-Bahns are or aren't covered? Again, the Eurail sites are unhelpful. I tried emailing and the response was "what's covered is on our site" which was no help at all because, of course, this question isn't on the site. Typical canned help desk stuff.

thanks. I'm three months in Germany with a three month Global pass (going to do a lot of Day Tripping). "So using a day" won't matter.

I think you are saying that there's know way of knowing from the itinerary on the DB site whether the particular S-bahn is covered. Just wait and look at the logo when I get there....

Thanks for the info on Mannheim. Is there any general list of which S-bahns' are DB or not?

Susan,

Your pass covers any S-Bahn in Germany.
