My son is studying Junior Year Abroad in Rome. Since he does not know his travel plans at this time we are trying to decide if for starters a 5 country, two month, 10 days of travel for $471 through ISIC is a good deal or save the money and he should travel Ryan Air (or anther cheap airline).
Although if he travels by train to Munich $150E or Zurich $200E from Rome the eurail would be paid for and all other rail travel is gravy during the two months. Thanks
If he is planning on doing long hauls like that, then a pass might be just as easy. Figure you are talking just under $50 US per day of travel or about 35 Euro. Trains would be more convenient and with few add-ons as long as you can avoid reservation and upgrade fee's. Keep in mind that with Ryan-Air, even a 0 Euro plane ticket costs you about 30 Euro, plus 10 more Euro if you want to check a bag. Also, many Ryan-Air airports are a 15-20 Euro shuttle ride from the city center they serve, and you really need to make your plans well ahead of time to get the low prices. However, make sure he does not waste travel days on cheap travel within Italy.
Trains are so easy to use and a great way to travel. Low cost aircarriers extra fees can add up and like the previous poster said they sometimes dump you in an airport far away from the city. Trains stations are generally within walking distance from your hotel/hostel.
