Eurail Pass & Reservations

In early Sept we are flying to Zurich then train to Murren, Venice, Sorrento and out of Rome, 21 days. I have checked buying separate tickets vs Eurail pass. We have to get a 3 country 5 day pass to have it work in Switzerland and Italy. Turned out the 1st class pass would be the same as 2nd class separate. But, to make reservation on line it was much more than the $10 a piece per segment that has been talked about. It was $22 to $26 per segment a piece. Is it that much less expensive to get reservations on the fly? Thanks for sharing info and ideas with me.

First place, the $10/segment that "has been talked about" was 10€/segment (about $13), and for Venice to Naples, RailEurope shows two segments (Venice to Bologna and Bologna to Naples) for $26, total, $13 per segment. Also note, the Naples to Sorrento segment in on Circumvesuviana, a private line, is not covered by the rail pass. A Eurail 3 country 5 day pass, according to this website, would be $376/person, $752 or 611€ for 2 people. I see 4 segments for your trip. That's over 150€ per segment for two people. Surely you can get point-point tickets for two for 150€/segment (Hint, don't use inflated RailEurope prices for your comparison). Naples to Rome in 2nd class is only 43€/person full fare (less with advance purchase) (only 33€ more than the reservation charges with a pass).

I don't know your actual travel dates...but, your entire Venezia-Napoli leg could cost only €13,00. For the fast trains. Napoli-Roma is €9,00. Includes all reservations fees, too. Seriously. If you haven't looked at Trenitalia.com yet, please do - and HURRY! The super-cheap fares sell out, but there are still several good ones for Sept. At the top center of the Trenitalia page, click on the English flag. Your cities must be typed In Italan :-( But first please, please, read this very helpful post from the wonderful website RonInRome.com. And then, buy your tickets ASAP online from Trenitalia! http://www.roninrome.com/transportation/ticket-purchasing-issues-using-the-trenitalia-website#more-17841 Sorry; this link simply won't work today :-( You'll have to get there yourself!
