I just bought a BeNeLux pass for my trip next month. I have used rail passes many times before and they have always been paper. This one was electronic and I have been looking at the app to try and figure it out. I like to "hop on and hop off" on the fly and the paper pass is great for that as I just show it and I am good to go. I am concerned with the "rail planner" feature to save a trip and get a bar code to show the conductor. What if I don't have a signal or if my battery is dead? Seems risky to me. Has anyone used it and if so is it easy to make last minute trains and get the QR code? Also, do you think it is possible to switch to a paper ticket now that I have already bought the mobile pass? (NOTE: I plan to take trains that do not require seat reservations so my question is not how to make seat reservations). Thanks!!
If you have the option to save the pass to your Apple Wallet, you could do that and it doesn’t require data. Otherwise, take a screenshot of the QR code and save it to your photos. Then create an album for Passes (or whatever you want to call it). Then you just need to open that album and pull up the photo. They can scan the code from there.
You can always print out the screenshot.
Always carry a fully charged power bank.
Those are great ideas and I will definitely do that. What about making last minute decisions to take trains? In other words, if you plan to take an early train but want to stay longer and catch the later train. With a paper pass, this is not problem. With this mobile pass, has anyone done this and if so, was it easy to get a new QR code to show for the later train?
These are questions you should probably ask your Eurail provider. We’ve had recent experience with other transportation companies in Europe and entertainment QR tickets that were invalid if they were a screenshot or saved on the phone. They needed to be “live” when scanned. Some had a word of the day and others had an animated symbol that appeared on the screen with the QR code. You should try to find out from Eurail and it’s documentation, what is an acceptable way to retrieve your code for scanning.
