If we purchase a eurail pass - can we use our tickets on the deutchbahn, italy's train system, etc. We are going to 6 different countries, but traveling within each country a bit as well - wondering if we should get the global pass?
Megan, www.eurail.com has pages that clearly shows which train systems in the different countries permit the Eurail pass and which trains in those countries (usually the premium trains) require supplemental fees. In some countries, there are train systems where the pass is no good and some where it only provides a small discount. Again, the Eurail website has this information.
For Italy, you can ride on most any train with your Eurail pass but if you ride on the Eurostar-class train, they will charge you an extra 15-20Euro as a supplemental fee. Also, if you intend to ride the private Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Sorrento, your pass is not accepted. It's a very cheap ticket anyway.
