EU passport control in Madrid if transiting?

My wife and I are flying Iberia from Chicago to Rome. We will check our luggage all the way through to Rome. This flight combo gives us 1 hr and 15 minutes to change planes (to another iberia flight) in Madrid. When we went through Heathrow they had a transit bypass for people who where continuing onto another EU country. Do they have the same arrangement in Madrid? If yes, 1 hr and 15 min should give us enough time to change planes. If no, 1 hr and 15 minutes might not be enough time. Thanks.

The UK isn't part of the Schengen treaty which is why you didn't have to go through Immigration at Heathrow. As both Spain and Italy are part of the Schengen Zone, you must go through Immigration at Madrid, and probably another security check...no way around it. So 1hr 15 minutes will be tight. But Iberia probably has multiple flights between the two cities, so if you miss your original connection, they can put you on a later flight.
