EU banning carryon fees?

In summary, the EU transport committee has voted to ban carryon fees on all flights originating within the EU. It now has to go to vote but their is no timetable for that yet.

E.U. Wants to Ban All Fees for Carry-on Bags https://share.google/2hN8aBPPB86y0p9iQ

So besides higher ticket prices to make up the lost revenue I have to wonder what other creative fees the discount airlines will come up with. I'm also betting the airlines will be policing the maximum size and weight limits even tighter now, boarding will be slower, and complaints will continue with people still trying to cheat the rules.

"I'm also betting the airlines will be policing the maximum size
. . ." Good! Maybe if carry-on bags are the right size the slow-down inside the plane as travelers slowly maneuver their oversized suitcases will be faster. So tired of them taking up way too much space both in the aisles and overhead bins.

I'm also suprised by the size of some of those carry-ons. But, as you say, there will be higher ticket prices to make up for lost revenue. And there's no need for the airlines to explain it: the not so subtle fee for choosing a seat ain't foolin' anyone.

A couple thoughts...

A committee voting to move the proposal forward is still a longs ways away from actually getting it into statute, and then enforcing it, especially in the EU.

Yes, worst case, prices go up, after all, the model of the budget airlines is pay for what you need, if you start including extras, you pay for extras.

The obvious response from the budgets, if pressed, is to require checking, allowing only a single personal item.

Whatever size they come up with as a minimum, still will not be enough for most on here for a two week or more trip.

I am certain all the airline business experts on the committee considered all the airlinr business, cost, and passenger convenience and preference factors before moving forward on this.

How I hope this is sarcasm!!!

There is a missing clarification in the article. What is being considered by the European Parliament is not to ban all carry-on fees, but only for small hand luggage weighing less than 7 kg.

Won't improve my experience if it adds 1 euro to the cost of a ticket.

But JoLui is correct. If you Google the topic, you will see the majority of the headlines are designed to inflame and sell clicks. But what they say is simply not true. It's about free personal underseat items, not carry-on bags. Those are currently free on the cheapest Wizz, and I believe Ryan tickets. WIzz charges for them on the higher price tickets when you pay for a full size carryon.

Can it do anything other than make things faster, cheaper and better?
I dunno there Mr E.

Not sure where you get cheaper from? I suspect the people coming up with this stuff dunno either. I prefer a government that doesn't try to micromanage the world it controls. That scenario has never worked well. Well intentioned sure. But smart? Probably not.

One final "But" not my government or my country(s) so I wish them well and watch with great interest.

Every plane Airbus or Boeing makes ( in a model class) is the same size. Therefore they can all hold the same size bags. The space to put the bins is the same size on every plane.

Not true. Some of the newer model 737's can hold more carry on bags since the overhead bins were redesigned. They are deeper so bags go in wheels first and on the shorter side rather the long side.

Frank II, but that can be overcome if the EU legislates the actual design of the plane.

But most of the posts above, even the long one are missing the point that the proposal has nothing to do with carryon size luggage.

Joe33F, again, the proposal has nothing to do with carry on bags. The headlines are false. It's about free underseat "personal items".

But Joe, if your correct. So what. Its their plane. Fly another. Still the overwhelming majority of the European airlines accept 14 x 9 x 21.5. So just buy that and avoid the 3 airlines that have different standards. Who cares. Its a non issue.

From another thread about train liggage:

BREAKING: EU TO STANDARDIZE DIMENSIONS OF LUGGAGE PERMITTED ON TRAINS TO MAXIMIZE EFFICIENCY OF STORAGE RACKS.
