I supplied an answer to a question just like this previously and have gone back and gotten my response for you. That might be a tight transfer...are you checking bags? My detailed notes below are for a transfer we did with carry on only. Hope this gives you some idea. We were going from T5 to T3. We just did that transfer three days ago. It took us 55 minutes gate to gate, using the bus. I did not see a train option. Also, we were first off our flight, not last, so factor time in for that. We got off the flight, walked down various hallways for 15 minutes at a fast clip. Got to a bus area for terminal tranfers, waited a few minutes for a bus. Bus ride was ten minutes. Got to terminal five ( we were going from three to five) and had a quick passport check. Then there were staffed tables warning us about travel liquid restrctions. Then went up an escalator and came to a full security checkpoint...scanners, bag search and everything. Line to get through this was about 15 minutes. Hope this helps.

@Valerie - were you transferring between international flights? Because it doesn't sound like you had to clear immigration, and I think the poster will need to clear immigration at Heathrow, although not customs. I might expect to make that transfer, but I'd be doing it with a UK passport, and I still would prefer more time. I don't think I'd risk it with a US passport.

Thank you for the helpful replies! This is sounding tight, time wise. I think we will have to pass thru immigration at Heathrow en route to Edinburgh. We are having the roll ons checked thru to Edinburgh for the first of our several European visits.

Kathy, We were transferring between international flights. We came in from Toronto on Air Canada and transfered to a British Airways flight to Venice. I agree with you that it doesn't seem like we had to clear immigration....we only did carryon just for that reason. Given that we didn't clear immigration, I was surprised at how long the transfer took. The customs and then upstairs to the additional security check added quite a bit of time. And we had no line ahead of us. If there was a line, I would think you could easily add 30 minutes to the 55 it took us.

@Valerie - you shouldn't have needed to clear either immigration or customs for an international transfer, since the UK isn't in Schengen. Really annoying to have to do the security check again!

I took the same BMI flight last May.... landed at terminal 1 at 6:45 & the BMI flight was also out out terminal 1. Biggest problem was that the gate assignment wasn't posted until right at 8:00 and the passenger waiting area was 20 minutes away. Keep an eye on the gate assignment board & head out as soon as you know what it is.
