- We reserved trains well in advance and saved huge amounts of money that way. Do it if you have a fixed itinerary!
- With train tickets, AND with National Express Coach (inter-city bus) tickets, you can download vouchers for two-for-one tickets to things like the Tower of London. (Keep your ticket; for National Express, that's easy; for trains, the ticket will be eaten when you exit the station so you need to talk to an employee to get a non-eaten ticket before you exit the station)
- In London, for shorter distances we took buses (vs the Tube). We only took the Tube for longer distances. We used an Oyster card (cost 5 pounds but you get a refund when you turn it in at the station). Bus is half the price of the Tube, plus you can see what you are driving past, plus it is nowhere near as crowded as the Tube; in May, we never had a problem finding a seat on the bus. Google maps will tell you the bus number you need to get from A to B. It's fun to sit upstairs.
- If you don't have a car, for the Cotswolds it is very efficient to stay in Moreton-in-Marsh (I recommend Treetops B&B -- wonderful!). You can easily take the bus to Broadway & then Chipping Campden (in one direction) or Stow-on-the-Wold (in the other direction) and from there, do hikes. The bus trips are short. WARNING: as RS says, schedule this so that you don't plan on taking buses on Sunday.
- Again, as RS mentions, if you want to get from Bath to the Cotswolds, you can take the Lion Tours (excellent!) of the Cotswolds, and pay a small extra amount (2.50 in pounds) to get yourself and/or your baggage dropped off at or near your next destination in the Cotswolds.
