England Rails for Castle Visits.

I am planning a trip for a week to England. I am hoping to find an itinerary that will depart London via rail to several destinations with Castles. The Castles may have lodging within them but not necessary. Any advice on cities / towns that have a rail stop will be greatly. appreciated.

Here are some ideas, starting right next to Heathrow Airport (did you hear the story, apocryphal I hope, about the tourist that asked a guide at Windsor Castle why they located the Castle so close to the airport?):Windsor CastleWarwick CastleDover Castle York Castle Arundel Castle You may need a bit of a cab or bus ride to get to some of these but they're all close to rail lines; however, I'm not aware that any of these major historic castles provide lodging (unless you know the Queen, then maybe you can stay over at Windsor).

Jeff, you may want to consider a car rental. We really like train travel, but in exploring trips to Cheltanham and York from London, found the trains very expensive. We found Enterprise to have great rates and to be very helpful. We rented at Heathrow and they even loaned a superb Michelin spiral bound road atlas. While country roads are very narrow and driving them on the left can be a bit nerve racking, more major roads are wonderful and driving on the left soon comes very naturally. We found that the English drivers are very good. Additionally you will be able to stop in the countryside, other than at the castles.
