Engineering Works on National Rail

Does anyone have any experience either getting tickets or travelling on National Express East Coast during an "Engineering Works" period? I'm finding that National Rail is proposing work during much of June that will require changes to schedules and replacing some legs of a journey with a bus. They haven't released the "advanced purchase" (discounted) tickets for weekends in June, so the only tickets available are significantly more expensive than normal. They also don't indicate any time difference for any of the available routes, even though they'll be using buses.

Has anyone experienced this and how much time did it add to your journey? We'll be traveling from Newcastle to London. Thanks.

Very strange. It did have a topic when I first posted. Must be ghosts in the machine. Thanks.

Hi, I've travelled on that route before during engineering works on a Sunday and they were very well organised with a whole fleet of coaches waiting at the station to provide the bus service. There were no significant delays, although it may depend on how long a stretch of journey is provided by bus. Obviously with English trains there are no guarantees of reliability but it's a major route so it should be alright.

You could try going by bus, using the national express coach site or megabus.co.uk which may be cheaper but will take longer. Also as far as I know megabus does not have much luggage storage space available.

Hope that helps
