EES Rome update

Came back from the U.S. into Rome yesterday. It was later on a Sunday evening and crowding was medium, I'd say. I was very concerned about it because I was bringing my 92-year-old mother with me. Turns out this is an excellent thing to do, because the wheelchair service nonchalantly skips ALL the lines. He marched us right up to a manned immigration booth and put us at the front of the line, in front of a young couple with a very small baby strapped to the dad's chest. I felt guilty but we went through - one U.S. citizen, one Canadian citizen/Italian resident - in nothing flat.

So I realize most of you will not be dragging your mothers around for this expediting purpose ;). What I wanted to say is that now the signage is exceptionally clear as to where Schengen-eligible visitors, i.e., those who do not need separate tourist visas, are to line up (Americans, Canadians, Australians, British etc.) vs. where European citizens AND RESIDENTS need to go. The EU line specifically said EU Citizens and Residents. It was not so clear at the beginning, and created much havoc for those of us who have Schengen-eligible passports but also residency permits.

There were also lots of employees directing traffic. The people arriving seemed to filter quickly into the appropriate lines, without a lot of milling about and arguing. So I'd say the chaos is resolving. There will be always be some chaos just to spice things up, but it's much better than it was a few months ago.

P.S. and unrelated to the topic: the wheelchair service guy also cleared people out of the wheelchair area at the baggage claim belt and skipped the line at the car rental kiosk. Then took us straight to the rental car. Great service after 24 hours on the road.

Thanks for the laugh! Seriously I was intrigued to read the signage said 'EU Citizens AND residents'. I have yet to see such a sign in CPH, where I transit to my adopted country of Sweden. But now I will be watching out for it!

HAHA well it is Italy!

glad I could supply a chuckle. I wanted to add that the immigration agents also seem very clued in now. I gave the agent my passport and residency permit simultaneously and he looked at it and stamped my passport with no questions or issues.

My mom did not have to do the biometric registration at all. Benefits of being 92 I guess. He just stamped her passport too.

for anyone interested, here is a very good picture showing the immigration doors at Rome Fiumicino. It's a link to an expat newsletter I subscribe to and trust, but of course use your own judgment. It shows what I described above: the door for EU citizens and those with Residence Permits vs. the door for non-EU citizens.

The article also says Rome may suspend EES operations this summer due to expected crowds.

Rome did EES on the way in to the country and ignored it on the way out. They ignored it so completely that they didn’t bother scanning passport so no exit was recorded in the system. This became an issue on my next entry (Helsinki) in June.

Boots on the ground at FCO last Thursday, June 18. We had flown into, and did our initial EES at Venice Marco Polo. Easy, efficient, and in and out in probably ten minutes. Several weeks later, leaving FCO, we allowed three hours plus…my husband’s passport would not “work”, and we were directed to a manual screening area. So many others were in that line, one has to think that there are still quite a few bugs in the EES system. There were very helpful employees everywhere, and folks who had tight connections were moved through quickly, but still so many stressed out travelers. I’m sure the time of day might factor in…our flight was just after 11 am. My suggestion is that people plan to arrive at least three hours before their boarding time…and pack your patience…it’s all good.

Cathy, thanks for the mention about EES at VCE. I fly in and out of Venice in September.
