EES registration experience Munich airport

Arrived at Munich airport 3/29/26 at 7:30am on Delta.- only our plane in line at the time. Deplaned plane as the first 20 people to get off. Reached machines to take passport, picture and fingerprints with no line- only 8 machines though. Took 3 out of my 4 fingers on first try- yeah!! As I have trouble getting my fingerprints to take for my yearly background check for my job. Able to do in minutes but no questions asked. Long line formed quickly behind me so airport officials telling some people to skip and just go get in line to do manually. Everyone had to stand in regular immigration line and I still had to get my passport stamped. I basically registered but they were not really using it the right way yet. Took 30 minutes in the line to have passport stamped as they only had 2 people and they were very slow!! If I had been further back in the plane it would have taken a while. The line quickly backed up as I was waiting. Figure at least a couple hours for some people.

I had a similar experience in Madrid 2 weeks ago. We were the first group off the plane, so the EES line was not long. The machines were a little finicky. I had to scan my passport multiple times, retake my photo, and scan my fingerprints four times.

My brother-in-law and I were asked a series of questions; my sister was not. The questions included: Are you staying long-term or do you have a visa? (No.) Purpose of visit? (Tourism.) Do you have proof of financial means? (Yes.) Type of accommodation? (Hotel.) Length of stay? (We selected our departure date on a calendar.)

What surprised me was that after using the EES machines, we then had to wait in a second line for the eGates, where we scanned our passports and had another photo taken. And after that, we then proceeded to a third line to see a border officer to have our passports stamped. I thought using EES meant we no on longer had to see a human to get our passports stamped.

Oh my, little did I know how glad I would be to have a 4.5 hour connection in Munich for my upcoming trip.

Thanks for these insights.

We’ll be flying a direct flight to Naples in 4 weeks. We’re very happy we don’t have a connecting flight this time. I will report on our experience.

We had problems with fingerprints in Frankfort in February, but we are now registered. The process took about 10 minutes from registration to going through the immigration line. All of the lines were open at 8:00 AM.

A tip from a friend from when Global Entry back to US required you put your fingers in the scanner is to first touch your fingers to your forehead. As you age your fingerprints thin and the cabin air is dry exacerbating that. But a bit of moisture from your forehead can make a difference. No idea if that would help for the new EES scanner but just in case!

I will be arriving CDG in May.

I know that I will be doing an "E" at the airport. Can never keep up with all the "E's" but I have learned that ETA is London and it is done in advance,

My thoughts were that it is very simple. I get in line and staff takes my pictures and fingerprints me.

Am I wrong? Do I have to go to a machine and do it myself?

Hi bostonphil7, you will be using the EES machines when you arrive in France.

This video will show you the machines in Prague, but they will be very similar in Paris.

Don’t worry. If my brother-in-law can do it, you will have no problems. :-)

Thanks for all that information.

I'll just have to wait and see if I am going to be encountering a barrage of the perfunctory questions or only a few upon landing on 27 May at CDG. It's a matter of luck , whimsical luck, when you approach the scanner only to see that it's not working as it is supposed to, you're holding up the line, you're trying to get the attention of a "trouble-shooter" standing there. You're directed to go to another scanner and that one doesn't work either, ....I've seen that too.

No matter , I still get the passport stamped in the end.

Thank you Carrie

I have travel insurance with Allianz for my flights but that may be all. If I say "no" to travel insurance, then what?

i do not think that France yet requires travel insurance.

Maybe I should call my credit cards and see what they offer, if anything. I am thinking about travel insurance.

I am assuming that if I am having difficulty and holding up the line, someone will assist me

When they ask about travel insurance, they mean travel medical insurance. I hope your policy covers medical.

Hi bostonphil7, keep in mind the video was for the Czech Republic. Each country will have slightly different questions. I was not asked about travel or medical insurance in Spain.

These were the questions I had: Are you staying long-term or do you have a visa? (No.) Purpose of visit? (Tourism.) Do you have proof of financial means? (Yes.) Type of accommodation? (Hotel.) Length of stay? (We selected our departure date on a calendar.)

Perhaps someone who has experienced EES in France can report back on those questions.

Hi Laura

I do not believe that my travel insurance includes health. Might need to check into health with Allianz but I will only be in Paris a week.

My medicare will not cover me if something should happen in Paris.

Thank you Carrie

Was not spending a lot of time on "Arriving at CDG" a few months back but now spending some time focusing on it.

I possibly will be starting my own thread on Arriving at CDG soon. New questions are popping up.

Well just for fun I would add that arriving in CPH last Friday, April 2nd, EES had disappeared! After being there in December when I arrived last time there were machines and a quick EES registration process. Staff told me last week they'd 'had problems with EES' so they'd taken it down! Just the usual immigration procedures as in years past.

PS, BostonPhil, As this thread is about EES, I would suggest you review some of the threads about medical & travel insurance, there are so many on the forum! The devil IS in the detail when it comes to insurance.

Well, I hope they iron out all the bugs before I get to Munich in late November! 😊

My medicare will not cover me if something should happen in Paris.

BostonPhil, if you have a Medicare supplement plan, it should cover emergency medical care overseas.
