Reaching out to those familiar with the airport in Copenhagen—I read that the deadline for the ‘full’ launch of the data EES at passport control is April 10. I have a quick 2 hr 20 min layover in CPH on my way to Athens on the 14th. Are the self kiosks fully operational here yet, or should I expect terrible long lines? Flight arrival from the US I to CPH is at noon. Thanks in advance for your input.
Instead of continually reposting this, wait for someone who knows to answer.
Have you registered for EES? The long lines are for people who need to register. Otherwise, it's fairly quick.
Thanks for the friendly tip. My original 1x post from yesterday was moved from the “country” section to the “transportation” topic. I have not continually posted this topic.
My understanding is that only Sweden and Portugal so far, are accepting “pre registration” through the app. Perhaps I’m missing something here.
Kiosks have been in operation for some time. It is just during the rollout period, not all passengers were required to use them, and I am sure Copenhagen has had on and off issues. The April 10th date means that 100% of the passengers are intended to use the kiosks.
Hard telling what you can expect. My hunch, seeing the average person encounter new technology, is that what seems simple, usually is not. Heck standing behind people that have never been through a TSA checkpoint can be frustrating. Expect that it will take longer than usual, but then what does that mean.
You can go on You-Tube and see videos of people going through the kiosks, it really is not difficult, should take no longer than a manual screening. You scan your passport, register your fingerprints, smile at the camera, and answer a half-dozen questions. Many report it goes quickly, the main issue reported is people having issues with the fingerprints.
You mentioned the new app they are using in Lisbon, it should be noted that it is being used to expedite manual processing, not the EES kiosks. The issue in Lisbon is really the shortcomings of the airport, not related to EES. They implemented the app because border control was simply stamping people through, doing no checks, it was seen as a security issue.
That’s an interesting note about the new app. It sounded promising yet slow to be implemented and perhaps not so useful. I have used these kiosks in other locations and they can be efficient. I am mostly concerned with long lines now that everyone will be using them, and of course making my connection. We shall see! Appreciate the information.
I don’t have experience at the Copenhagen airport, but I did just encounter EES at the Madrid airport earlier this month. This was my experience:
Upon arrival in Madrid, we were bussed from the tarmac to Terminal 4S
for passport control. There was no line when we arrived. All U.S.
passport holders were directed to the EES machines. There appeared to
be about 35–40 machines, and all were working, but they were a bit
finicky. I had to scan my passport multiple times, retake my photo,
and scan my fingerprints four times. My brother-in-law and I were asked a series of questions; my sister
was not. The questions included: Are you staying long-term or do you
have a visa? (No.) Purpose of visit? (Tourism.) Do you have proof of
financial means? (Yes.) Type of accommodation? (Hotel.) Length of
stay? (We selected our departure date on a calendar.)After completing the process, my sister and I were directed to see a
border officer, while my brother-in-law was directed to the eGates.Next, we all went through the eGates, where we scanned our passports
and had another photo taken. We then proceeded to a border officer. We
approached together; the officer looked at our passports, compared
them to our faces, and stamped them.I can easily see this process backing up if several flights arrive at
once, but we were very lucky with timing.
The time it takes is very dependent on how many international flights are arriving at the same time and there is just no way to predict that unfortunately.
Good Luck!! I hope you’ll let us know how it goes. I will be flying into Copenhagen in May.
Thanks, Carrie, fingers crossed for same luck with timing. I will let you know how it goes at CPH in a few weeks.
The EES mobile app is called 'Travel to Europe', but so far only Sweden and Portugal have started to use it.
Here is a video of someone showing how to use the EES self-help kiosk at Prague Airport; I assume it should be quite similar for the other airports. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaiszoFXinM
I will be using it for the first time when I take the Greece tour next month. For the EES question 'the purpose of your trip', I assume tour group is under the category ''tourism - organized''.
Also I just looked up how to prep one's fingers for fingerprint scanning ahead of time:
The best thing you can do to avoid having your fingerprints rejected is to moisturize. Start using lotion on your hands at least 2–3 times per day for several days leading up to your fingerprint scanning event. Do not use lotion on the day of your fingerprint scan.
