I need to get from Edinburgh to Madrid (just one way) in October. I've looked at EasyJet, Spanair, BA, BMI; so far the only solutions are either insane midnight hours or insane amounts of money. Any experience or suggestions???? I appreciate any help you can give.

No experience with this route but if it were I, I'd look at www.whichbudget.com to try to piece together flights at a lower cost. Edinburgh to London then London to Madrid, for example. Is there any interim place that you'd like to stop over for a night or two on the way? Just a thought...

Check out the price of a round trip ticket - sometimes these are a lot cheaper. Then just don't use the return portion.
