We are basing in Echternach Luxembourg for some hiking. What is the best way to do a day trip to Trier without a car? Train, bus, private hire?

Best? Time or money? Looks like quickest public transport is a bus to Wasserbillig, then bus to Trier. Takes about 1 1/4 hours, but the bus to Wasserbillig is free, so you only pay for the bus to Trier.
