EasyJet: Just how strict for carryone luggage? 60cm vs 55cm maximum

I have a soft backpack that is 5cm too long according to EasyJet's luggage (carry on) webpage.

Do they just "eye" the luggage to see if it's too big or do you drop in into a regulation box and if it doesn't fit you have to check it (put it in luggage hold) and pay fees (credit card on the spot???)

(I can squeeze it down to 56cm--one cm over--since it's non-rigid.)

Are they really strict? (because they are a budget airline and they are looking to make as much money as possible extra fees) or do you think we'll be fine?

I'd rather save the 22 euros and just carry on. I've carried this on TEN TIMES in the past for various airlines and it EASILY fits on the top luggage compartment.

I just don't know if I could pre-pay right now on the website as I'm booking the flight for two items to go into the hold when I'd rather just carry on.

Even then I'd rather pay the fee and STILL carry them onboard so that there is no chance of my luggage getting LOST.

Peter, my experience is that you'll probably need to pay. My wife and I flew Easyjet from Madrid to Lisbon this past November. We had 2 bags, both of them Rick Steves rolling bags. At the check in counter, they had us try to put our bags in a metal frame - they can be carried on if they fit or must be checked if they don't fit. The bags wouldn't fit primarily because the wheels made the bags too long. We had to step out of line and go to a different counter to pay (I think 18 euro) before they would take our bags and check us onto the flight. We would've been better off prepaying for the bags. We picked up our bags with no problem in Lisbon, except someone had stolen our REI luggage tags - they were nice but not that nice! Petty theft - probably showed up in a Madrid or Lisbon flea market that weekend.

Hi Peter-

Well, I think this is one of those issues that depends solely on the person at the counter; sort of like who you get in the security check line.

My son and I just flew on EasyJet. We checked a bag (simply because it was heavy and we didn't want the burden of carrying it) and had three carry on bags between us. One was my "purse". We didn't have any problems whatsoever. What surprised us was the fellow sitting next to us. He carried on seven, yes, seven bags! I asked him about it as I was worried about the weight and dimensions of my one checked bag. He said EasyJet is "easy" when it comes to baggage, not to fret.

So, I don't think I "answered" your question but simply gave you a story of what we experienced. I think if it were me, I'd just attempt to carry it on. The worst that will happen is they will say you cannot and it will be checked.

I have flow EasyJet 5 times round trip in the last six months and no has closely inspected my carry-on bag on any of the journeys. I have seen a variety of bags (both in size and number) that did not meet their restrictions and people were allowed to board with no problem. You can check-in online and skip the check-in counter all together, but you still have to deal with the agent at the gate.

However, it is a gamble you are going to have to decide if you want to take. The rules and regulations do state that they can refuse you boarding if you try to board with luggage that falls outside of the size restrictions. They are not going to let you check it at the gate like a normal airline, they will simply not let you board. For me, at least, it is not worth the risk.
