Hi, I was shocked to be hit with a 100 Euros penalty fee on our Rome to Paris flight. I was told long ago by the Cust Service person via email that we were allowed up to 8 pcs. of luggage or boxes to be checked in so long as we did not
exceed 44 lbs. max or higher fees at the airport would kick in.
I paid for 4 hold luggages online when I booked the flight..did not purchase
excess wt. We me up with our daughter in Florence, It as she was studying abroad..seemed she had more stuff than planned so we didn't know she would need another luggage...we had 5 luggages in total..and I can guess
since we didn't prepay for a 5th pc...we were penalized for the hold fee and
the excess wt?..thought it was excessive.
We were not asked to place our carryon luggages in their metal frame to make sure it fit..but several passengers were asked to do that.

The easyJet website says that if you don't book all of your bags during the reservation process, and then have more pieces than you have paid for, you will be charged for the additional bag as excess weight. Because of the 5th bag, you might have had more than the 44 lb. limit anyway, so you would have been charged for that. You don't say how much your total weight was, but overweight charges are 12 euros/kilo (2.2 lbs), so 100 euros works out to just over 18 lbs of additional weight that you had to pay for. You didn't pay a charge for the 5th piece in addition, just the excess weight.

Hi Nancy, the total weight for our 5 checked in luggages was 87.4.
and the max allowed was 80...for 4 hold (checked in pcs. prepaid online).
7.4 overweight?

No, it's because they treated your whole 5th bag as "excess weight", so you were charged whatever it weighed, even though part of that would have been within the allowance if you had claimed it ahead of time. The rule says that if you have more bags than you planned for, the extra bag is charged as excess weight regardless of the weight of your other bags. The max, though, is 44 lbs, so I'm not sure why your max would have been 80.

I think perhaps the airport agent was trying to give us some break by allowing the total combined weght..he was willing to let it go had we been able to get rid
of 7.4 kilos....but since we couldn't do that...we had to pay the penalties.
