My husband and I are going from the end of August to the end of September. We want to start either in Vienna or Prague and also go to Budapest, Slovakia, Slovania, Croatia and any other interesting cities, should we mostly travel by train and how soon in advance would we have to book hotels?

you'll travel via train between countries, and within most of the countries. in slovenia you should mostly ride buses. sep is moving into the low season so i don't think you'll need to book so early. but if you spot any good hotels with reasonable price you should book for the bigger towns. but if you can be dynamic then you're mostly ok. i'd say if you fly into vienna, then you want to book in vienna, prague, and budapest, other places you can just book on the go, or walk in. Sometimes I ask the hotel front desk to call for me to book room in the next town (in the same country), or just use internet cafe to email or book online.
