East Europe Train Question

A few friends and I will be in Prague in late March. We'll be in Prague for 4 nights then we want to take a sleeper train to either Krakow or Budapest, but we're not sure which one. We don't know much about either city so we wanted to wait until we were in Prague to make a decision. My question is: Should we make the decision now and book the train to ensure we get a seat or is it safe to book a sleeper train just a couple days in advance? Thanks for the input! Side Note: Any advice on Krakow vs. Budapest?

Well, I have been to Budapest and loved it. Beautiful, great energy, historic sights, great food....So I can definitely recommend it...but I cannot compare it yet.
I am, however going to Krakow in a few months based on great reviews from posters here. So you will be there before I go...if you choose Krakow post your reviews. You'll love Prague! Have a great trip. (I love your city...I was there a few weeks ago for a professional photographers convention)

I liked both, and don't think you can go wrong with either. There are historic highlights ( my favorite) in both cities, perhaps Budapest has more grand buildings since it's older; it seems more exotic to me. But I'm glad I saw Krakow, and Auschwitz.

Budapest is significantly larger than Krakow therefore more to see there. But Krakow is worth seeing, too. So it's up to you what you prefer. Big city or not so big city. If you just want a seat on the train you have time to buy ticket after you get to Prague. If you want couchette or bed you should probably be OK in March. But if you want to be 100% sure you can book the sleeper ahead.
